I've read that there had been people who were questioned by border security when they re-entered Australia on a valid ETA after having stayed for a long-ish period (2 or 3 months). Has anyone experienced that recently?

It happens quite a lot. The main thing is that the Department suspects that long stayers are working in Australia. Best to have evidence that you are not working, and that you are either visiting family or have a tourist itinerary.

Thanks for the explanation, Jeremy. It does sound a bit hard to provide evidence of not working unless you have a lot of cash on hand or something! Would repeat visits while waiting for the 309 be viewed with less suspicion? Since that comes under visiting family I would think.

People routinely get themselves in trouble because of information found on their mobile phones...
