Check out SEEK.COM.AU Put your name out to shops in Perth and see if the will sponsor you. Mechanics (I am an Auto Electrician/Mechanic) are needed to they may help. good luck

Probably the best thing for you eg6ray is to have a look at the WHV - Visa Options - Working Holiday - Visas & Immigration
That's about the only visa you can go for to come here and consider working.
You'll see if you do three months regional seasonal work you can apply for a second WHV and with mechanical skills, you may find a few agricultural areas where you'll not have much trouble getting work.
If you get plenty of work over two years, you may be able to save a bit of money as long as you do not spend it too fast and then consider finishing off training here via a TAFE college on a student visa and you should go along and have a talk with people at a TAFE college to see if they will take into account your apprenticeship to date so make sure you get all your documentation on that before finishing up.
A student visa will also allow you to work 20 hours/week while studying and unlimited when courses are not on so some chance to still earn some money.
Then when finished, you may be able to get an employer interested in sponsoring you for that is a bit impossible without at least a trade qualification.
And who knows, you might even meet a nice Aussie girl and may be able to end up with a partner visa.
Best Wishes for whatever you do.

You may be confusing the 417 with the 457 for the 417s are virtually automatic for those young enough to apply.
The 457s are not so difficult to get either once you are trade qualified and there is a demand, hence my thoughts on you completing qualifications here in Australia and through part-time work you could already have a ready made sponsor.

What sort of visa you're coming on will obviously determine what you can do and the 417 may be best for you for starters.
I did not know that they are issuing TFNs before you are in Australia but if you have one, they must!
As for the other visa, perhaps it is the Occupational Trainee Visa you are thinking of - Visa Options - Sponsored Training - Students - Visas & Immigration and that could allow you to be taken on to finish your apprenticeship in a normal indentured way.
If you've not yet booked accommodation, always helps to have somewhere planned for at least the first few days and BUG - the Backpackers' Ultimate guide to budget travel in Australia is as good a hostel search site as any and then you if you are planning on settling in the one place for a bit, you might find people looking to share accommodation outside of hostels and that could be about half the cost for you, sites like Share Accommodation & Share House Listings, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, craigslist: dallas / fort worth classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events , Free Local Classifieds Ads from all over Australia - Gumtree could be handy and also check hostel notice boards and ask the receptionists etc.
