Hi everybody,

Just a question about eVisitor 651 visa. Does work restrictions on tourist visa include working online for your company overseas too or not? Are you permitted to work on your own business if you are self employed in your own home country or you are just prohibited from working that is paid by an Australian company?

Thanks for your help in advance.

You are prohibited from working in Australia. If you work on your computer out of sight of anyone else, then it is unlikely that anyone will know or care. The point of the condition is preventing you working in Australia when you would be taking the job of another person.

So, just don't go around telling everyone.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for your reply. This case is not taking the job of another person but a self employed person managing/working on own business back home while on holiday in Australia. Would that break tourist visa obligations?

Don't mention it, you will be on holiday!

Now it does not need to be a very bright DIBP person to know that many or most self-employed company owners or large company management persons on holiday in Australia will probably answer a few phone calls and/or emails during the holiday.

So don't try and be clever - just let it flow and don't talk about it.

Thanks for this response.

I'd just like clarification on what defines work under a visitor visa (Tourist or Business stream)

Does online work for an overseas firm or self-employment "freelancing" but overseas customers fall under "unlawful work"?
