Hi,

My partner and I are living in Australia since June this year after she was granted the Partner Visa 309. We got married about 3 weeks and and she has changed her name and got a new drivers licence and bank card with this new name.We are going to contact them (immigration) on our online immi account with the updated information, but I am just wondering if my partner needs to update her passport to the new name too? or is she ok to keep her existing passport with her maiden name for now?

I ask this because its a big process to change it as she will need to go to the Slovak embassy down in Canberra and then wait 4-6 weeks and go back again.

Regards,
Daniel

You only need to advise immigration if you change the name on the passport, otherwise you don't advise them and they will see the name change on the bank statements when you provide them for the 100 visa.

A lot of people find it is easier to either wait until they have the PR or wait until the passport is due for renewal to change the name. Don't forget that if waiting for renewal that there are countries that require at least 6 months on visa when you exit the other country (I know countries like Indonesia, Singapore etc have this rule).

That's great! Thanks Mish, Should we still upload our marriage certificate to our immi account?

Just a bit worried as it says to notify them of any changes to our circumstances.

But I just noticed the only things you can notify them about are these categories below.

Update details

You can provide updated information to the department using the links below.
Change of address details
Change of email address details
Change of passport details
Request to cancel a temporary resident visa

So it doesn't seem to give us a section to let them know of our change of status that we are now married and she has changed her name.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Daniel

I kept my passport in my maiden name as it was easier. I won't change it until it's up for renewal. I personally don't think it matters about the marriage certificate and all that until Stage 2, then just upload it with the evidences then. Stage 2 is for updating them on the relationship since the grant of the temporary visa.
