First time posting here for help on what will seem our long journey.

If you marry your partner over in their home country, does this cancel out being able to apply for the PMV here? I'm pretty sure it does but hoping to hear from others about what their approach was and what visa they ended up submitting if this is was the case.
Also, how about if you submit the application and then marry before you hear back?

My parnter is over in Chile and we had plans to get married next year over there but are now thinking maybe this will make the process of us being together here in Australia more complicated as we will have only spent time together not lived together for the partner visa (offshore).

Any help or your experiences would be greatly appreciated as its all seeming quite overwhelming for us atm. Thanks

If you marry overseas and the marriage is legal in both that country & Australia then you will not get granted a PMV if married before the PMV is granted.

You can marry overseas after the PMV is granted if you want as long as they make their initial entry into Australia after the PMV is granted and the marriage is legal in Australia.

Thanks Mish. so its looking like if we cant wait to get married, we need to look at the partner visa right? I'm guessing that will be near impossible to get as we wouldn't have been living together.

Yes you would apply for the 309 visa. You would need to meet the requirements which are financial, social, household & commitment. Financial and household are the harder ones to get evidence for if living apart as you do need to think outside the box sometimes.

You can always do a consult with a registered migration agent to get an idea of which is the better option.

When my husband applied we did PMV because we did not have the evidence for a partner visa.

You can always have the ceremony and everything if you want to lock dates in just not the legal paperwork.
