Hi, My son who is 9 months old is on his tourist visa 600 in Australia. He has got 6months at a stretch and single entry visa .
However his application for 457 dependent applied through my employer back in India is still in petition filed status.
With this June, he will have expired the 6month stretch. Is there any Bridging Visa he is qualified for so that he can stay here until a decision on 457 is made.

Or is it mandatory to go back to India and apply a fresh tourist visa ?! Please advise.

You can't apply for a bridging visa by itself. If the sc. 457 visa was applied offshore, then there will be no bridging visa associated with it.

Depending on his visa conditions ("no further stay"), he could apply for another tourist visa in Australia.

Thanks for the clarificaiton. His Visa conditions are

8101 - NO WORK
8201 - MAXIMUM 3 MONTHS STUDY

Does it mean that he can apply for a tourist visa in Australia?

Yes, he can, but of course no guarantee that it will be granted.
