Hi all,

I have some question in relation to the questions concerning government debt.

I am currently living overseas with my wife and we are planning to apply for the partner visa offshore. But I (the sponsor) have significant government debt unfortunately.

On my sponsor application I of course will state my debts, Does anybody know if it will effect the outcome?

Also,on my wifes application there is a question about debts to the government which mentions family members. She has no debts but does this apply to the sponsor also?

"Pay your debts to the Australian Government
If you or any family members (including those who don't apply for the visa with you) owe the Australian government money, you or they must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back."

Anyone have any experience with something similar?

You might need to elaborate a bit on the debt mate and if you have or intend a payment plan.

My debt is an old restitution order for an offense I committed when I was younger.

I had a payment plan but stopped paying and now I am in the process of chasing it up.

Also I have some fines for not voting.

Sort the chasing it up,

Shyt I did have a few non vote things many moons ago. I answered the why not but never got a all clear or fine stands.

They never even crossed my mind in my applications, not till you mentioned just now

Provided a sponsor can satisfy the minister that s/he can satisfy the sponsorship undertaking, sponsor's debts will not result in a visa refusal.
