Hi guys,

My fiancé and I submitted our PMV 300 yesterday.

Long story short. I am the sponsor, an Australian citizen. For the past 18 months I have been in Canada, and the last 12 months been working and living here. I fly back to Australia to live permanently again on December 9th.

Now, I know I need to get a Canadian police check. I was wondering, is it a problem to get it done before I fly home? On say the 3rd of December. Technically I would still be in Canada until the 9th. Or does it have to be after I have left the country.

Organising the Canadian police check back home in Australia would cost a lot more, take a lot longer, and cause potential delays and in general be a lot more stressful. Where as if I do it here, apparently it only takes 3 days to get it mailed to you.

I know I run the risk of it expiring before our grant is hopefully approved, but it seems a lot easier for me. We applied for PMV on the 29th October. And I was planning to do the police check here around the first week of December. So it would still be good for around 13 months. My fiancé the applicant is from Germany, so it will be done through the Berlin office, which have been known to be relatively quick processing times (I hope).

Very conveniently for me, there is an RCMP literally 200 metres from my apartment. Do I need to call and make an appointment? Or can I just go in there and do it on the spot? I am guessing they conduct it all at the RCMP station.

The RCMP website was not too clear. The fingerprint process confused me too.

You're fine to do it now, before you leave Canada.

Haven't had to do the Canadian police check myself so can't comment on that aspect.

I'm only speculating here - there's not enough precedent really of them requiring sponsor police checks of every sponsor - but IMO case officers would have a bit more flexibility than the strict 12 months validity. Especially if you're no longer living in said country. The 12 month validity dictates the "must enter by" date for visa applicants (on their police checks). As you're already a citizen (or PR for other sponsors) the "must enter by" is irrelevant, so I would think the 12 month validity date is not as strict. But again that's just my opinion. We don't really have enough history as the sponsor police check requirement hasn't been in effect for that long. I'd be happy to be corrected if an RMA (or anyone else) comes along with more knowledge of the issue.

Nice to see other people here applying from Canada! My partner and I (she's the Aussie) applied for our police checks in September. We went to an accredited company (can provide you with a link if needed) and got them done.

We knew we were running the risk of having them expire before we received a grant, but did it anyways. It took 5 business days and we had our certificates in the mail. Easy peasy. I'd suggest doing it before hand, even with the one year shelf life on the document.

Also, has anyone done a police check here in Canada? Or from back home in Australia?

Sorry to double post. But when I called my local RCMP detachment, they said that without a request from the DIBP they couldn't perform our checks. So we went with an accredited company who took our finger prints and then sent them to the RCMP for us. Like I said in my initial post, 5 business days later, we had them.

All good! Here you go. The cost varies, but I can't imagine you will pay more than $60 each. It's good for one year and if you're headed back to Au in the next month or so, better to have it done before then. Just remember, you and your partner need to bring ID, cash (some places don't accept debit/credit). Call in advance though, get the fee, make sure you take it out of your joint account so you can reference it in your application

Nope! You pay the company you get the prints done at, then it's sent to the rcmp. One shot and done.

It's super easy. We were in and out within 20 minutes. We did it on a Saturday, had it back by the following Friday, if I remember correctly.

I ended up going to Commissionairies Canada in Victoria, and got my digital prints electronically done. Seemed like a very straight forward process.

However, that was on the 16th of November and I still havent received my police check from the RCMP in the mail?

I thought it was only 72 hours and then they mail it (which shouldnt take too long to post).

Its been just under two weeks now, and still nothing. I am starting to get concerned as I leave Canada to fly back home to Oz in about 10 days. I will try call them first thing tomorrow morning (they are closed now in Ottawa and I am in BC), but does anyone have any input or experiences as to why it seems to be taking this long? I know for a fact there is no criminal record on my part haha.

We verified through the site directly to find out who was able to provide us with a proper RCMP check (with fingerprinting).
We completed ours in June and did not apply until August once they came back. We may just have to reapply.
By the time they verify you at the RCMP level, you will be long gone (Dec 9 or later) before they are able to provide the reply and certificate.
We paid about 80 each here in Toronto for ours, both my spouse/sponsor and myself/applicant.

Which site are you referring to? And when you say you applied in August when they came back - Are you referring to your visa application? When you say by the time they verify you - do you mean the police check etc? It is quoted at 72 hours. Just wondering why you think it will not be done by 9th December?

Again, I thought it was a 72 hour turnaround (plus time for it to arrive by post).

Which company did you go through for your fingerprints to forward on to the RCMP?

Yes I did find the DCN reference number, and it also lists a contact number to call, which I googled and is the RCMP headquarters in Ottawa. I called but was on hold for an hour and had to leave to go to work. Will try again tomorrow.

Uh oh. Not a good situation for me.

Upon looking over my print out from the Commissionaries, it turns out the apartment number is missing from the address provided!

This is not ideal, as I literally leave Canada next Friday, and it is now Saturday so I cannot call anyone until Monday morning.

I am positive it will get sent back as undeliverable to the RCMP in Ottawa. It is my friends address too, so the mailman/apartment owner will not be able to link my name to the address.

To top it all off, DIBP have just requested Medicals and police checks.

Suppose I was a bit vague... depending on the time of day or who is at my feet (I have two littles needing me often) I may have missed some key points there...
We applied in June for my rcmp check with the intent on lodging the 309 once it came back but we had delays with 888 stat decs coming back to us timely and a few other things... we did get my check back by end of June and once the majority was compiled we lodged beginning of August even tho my rcmp check will expire early next June... may or may not be adequate time for a decision but we will cross that bridge later.
I found out about the place we went to for checks through the department website to make sure it was a legit choice... link after link took us to the company that could conduct the checks that the Australia DIBP would accept.
Hope this clarifies your q's.
