Hi All,

I met my husband on the internet in 2008 and travelled to his country, Cameroon in July where we married on 1st August. When i returned we submitted an application for spouse visa which was recieved by Australian High Commission in South Africa on 23rd October. Yesterday we recieved an email advising that he will need to have an interview in the New Year which will require my husband to travel to Nigeria as HC staff don't do them in Cameroon. They said they will contact us when interview dates for the New Year are available.

Anyone out there with an West African spouse who has been thru the process that can give us any advise on the trials and tribulations and the expected time frames - immi website says W.A. applicants can expect to wait 9-12 months for a decision as opposed to everyone else who's average waiting time is 3-6 months (how fair is that?)

Thanks - MrsEtie

Hi Mrs Etie,
DIAC has countries classed as high or low risk with various visas for all manner of reasons that I suppose they have from experience of many years.

And one part of processing time will be just where DIAC do have officials and services as you've found out, but you could get lucky and have the process move along reasonably quick.
http://www.australiaforum.com/visas-immigration/2376-de-facto-visa-qs.html is a thread involving Namibia and Loved Up put a lot of effort into making sure they had all application well done.

Result was approval in about three weeks from lodgement.

^ That's true, LovedUp's application ended up being processed faster that a good few people on here that were LR country.

I would say though, that the fact that you are already on the path to get interviewed is a good sign.

I have been trying to figure out what makes a country "High Risk" while looking at other stuff on the immi website. So far I have two ideas about it--a friend of mine ages ago had to jump through hoops in order to get her Thai BF a tourist visa. She was saying that she thinks thailand is a HR country maybe because immi have had more problems RE people overstaying and so on and that this could be true of other countries as well....

But, then if you look on the immi website, it says in a few places something like "if you are from a High Risk country (eg: a non ETA country)..." so that would point to HR countries being ones without a reciprical agreement with Oz, which makes even more sense in a way as this would surely make information sharing more difficult and hence take a longer time to process.... (here is a list of ETA countries: ETA (Visitor) (Subclass 976))

Meigh, dunno.... i reckon the second option makes more sense...or maybe its a combo of the two?

Hope your application goes well and quickley MrsEsti =)

If you check out the family/spouse timeline sticky thread at the top, it might give you a bit of an idea of how applications can be processed
- including a file loss it'd seem for Mr Etie but alls well that ends well [ less than four months too]
Email recieved from S.A. on the 9th November 2009 advising that an interview would be required at the nearest Australian High Commission to Cameroon - Nigeria. Told that once dates for an interview trip have been scheduled in the new year we would be notified

Advised by S.A. that file was being transfered to Kenya on 23rd November 2009.

Emailed H.C. in Nairobi on 12/12/09 asking for confirmation his file had been recieved - response was received 2 days later, they were looking into it....

Emailed H.C. in Nairobi again on 5/1/10 asking if they have found my husbands file yet - reply was we are still looking into it.....

Attempt to call H.C. in Nairobi on 29/1/10 - after several attempts made contact but was cut off mid conversation - managed to find out they still had not found his file......

1/2/10 - lodged a complaint via GFU on immi website asking for an explanation, stating we are concerned about being disadvantaged due to their poor record keeping practices

2/2/10 - recieved an email - VISA granted!!!!! WOOHOO
About page 5 I think her post is on.
