Applied for sub classes 309 and 100 and waiting for contact from CO ( Living in Canada). We are about to submit the police check and were wondering what happens if we are on holiday in Australia and the approval comes though while we are in Australia? Do I just need to leave Australia and then re-enter to activate? I'd still need to go back to Canada to settle everything but just wondering if it could be activated then rather than fly home to Canada then back to Australia.?

hope this all makes sense and thanks for taking the time to read it.

I applied offshore but was onshore when they were ready to finalize. They emailed me asking me to go offshore for 3-5 days. No, you don't have to fly back to your home country. We went to Asia and got the grant just fine.

You just need to be outside Australia when the 309 is granted.

As the IMMI website says -

You must ... "usually, be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is granted"

They cannot issue the 309 visa while you're in Australia. If you keep them informed of your travel plans and you happened to be in Australia when they're ready to grant the visa, they'll contact you to let you know to go offshore. Many people hop over to NZ for a few days and then come back when the visa is granted.
