Australia’s largest city will become a dark city for an hour on Saturday to help people become more aware of global warming. The lights will go out in many buildings and thousands of homes in Sydney.
“Earth Hour”, which begins at 7:30 pm on March 31, has been planned for 10 months by the city, businesses and a major newspaper group. A thousand businesses have agreed to take part, an organizer said. Twenty-seven thousand Sydney houses have also agreed to support the plan. Many restaurants have agreed to serve guests by using candles.
“We’re not asking people to go and live in a cave and eat cold beans,” one of the organizers said. “The idea of this is that, we can do simple things to cut greenhouse gas emissions .”
If successful, the Sydney blackout would be the world’s first.
“I think people have tried it before, but nobody has successfully done it. If it’s as successful as we hope, we hope to take it around the world and do this in every major city we can get to join us,” the organizer added.
Scientists think global warming has a lot to do with greenhouse gas emissions. Australia is one of the first countries to fight climate change.
