You should nearly find Sydney a bit like HK in November as it ought to be getting warmer and a bit muggy about the city, a bit like HK but smaller and like outer islands and new territories you do not have to go too far to get into some nice national parks both to north and south.
Have a look at 131500 Transport Infoline - Home re transport options and to get yourself a weeks pass may help.
You can get a bus out to the northern beaches area and a more peaceful area if wanting to be away from the busy city for a bit.
If you go and stay in a backpackers hostel you could find some other travellers that you can go with to visit places and make some friends.
Have a look in the travel section and scroll back a few pages and you could find some threads with more info but you'll find plenty of info in hostels or at the Sydney Visitors Information Centre in the Rocks area just adjacent to Circular Quay where all the ferries dock and a few other things:
Darling Harbour, Botanical Gardens > past Opera House, Museums, Hyde Park, Queen Victoria building and nearby The Strand for shops, South Head and North Head walks, Harbour/heads jet boats from near Opera House or Seaplane flight, Harbour bridge or just South Pylon climb and free to walk across the Harbour bridge, take a train to Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River for a River ferry postman trip , the Zoo with baby elephants and you can do a sleep over there and also Cockatoo Island in the Harbour also has set up tents for sleeping somewhere different.
Chocolated coated strawberries at the Rocks markets make a different breakfast!
