Victim of scam

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else here discovered they were unwittingly part of a relationship scam? My Ethiopian ex husbands visa was approved after 2 years (we met in Ethiopia 5 years ago) and after he finally arrived in Aus, I quickly twigged that something wasn't right and discovered he had been faking his side of the relationship and had used me for the visa. I withdrew sponsorship for his permanent visa (he arrived on prospective marriage visa) but because we had a child together, his visa was approved regardless. He basically used our child to ensure his visa to Aus. Has anyone else found themselves in a similar situation?

Oh that's so sad! I'm sorry to hear it. I seem to remember a post on this forum some time ago about a man who had experienced a similar thing with his foreign wife - he realised she had used him for the visa. Unfortunately I don't remember which forum member it was.

Hopefully the one good thing to come out of his remaining in Australia is that your child will get to know his dad and your husband will be liable for child support, neither of which would happen if he had been sent back to Africa.

I am so so sorry to hear this. Unfortunately it is probably more common than people wish to believe. I think some people are so desperate for a better life for themselves that they will dedicate as much time as required to a relationship if it gets them to Australia.

I often see men put in a similar situation - who have married women from overseas - they come here and claim they have been emotionally abused by their husbands and so obtain PR.

They are having this problem in the UK (and probably many other countries as well) so they continue to clamp down on partner visas.

But at the end of the day I don't think you can ever implement visa rules that will stop a situation like this from occurring without severely hurting genuine applicants.

Again I am so sorry to hear that this has happened to you. I hope 2015 is a much more positive year for you!

This makes me so sad more so because I have just had a conversation today about how people have a baby for a visa because they know they will get PR.

It is truly a sucky situation. I hope that he still spends time with your child and doesn't not see her anymore like some do.

If you don't mind would you be able to say how you realised he was using you for a visa? Just with so much of this happening now if people can see signs early (or before they get pregnant) maybe some of this can be stopped. Looking back now are there any signs that you should have seen.

Sometimes it would be nice that even if a child is from the relationship that the visa could be cancelled if due to fraud.

Unfortunately the fraudsters just ruin it for everyone else!

I'm so sorry to hear this. Amazing to think they can fake a loving relationship for 5 years and then turn into instant asshoke said when they hit oz soil and know they are home free, particularly if they have a child with you. I personally know two nigerian men who did exactly this to two friends of mine. It is well known in their community to make sure the wife gets pregnant ASAP. Both got their visas revoked. Both went to mrt. One quickly divorced his wife, had numerous gfs at one time, and the first to get pregnant, he married. Mrt approved his visa, even though he was only with his first wife in oz for five months. The other quickly got wife pregnant and when she finally got sick of his lying, cheating, ass raping, beating, drug abuse and emotional and physical domestic violence, she threw him out. He went to mrt and got his visa .

I know of numerous other women indirectly (friends of friends ) who suffered the same fate.

When the hell is mrt going to wake up to these soul stealing scum sucking scammers milking the system and fking this deliberately? The problem does not lie with immigration. It lies with mrt who do not even allow the wronged spouse to testify or be kept informed. They simply don't care. This makes me sick to the stomach.

I would be worried about myself with these statistics, except my lovely Ghanian husband has been an angel every day of our five years together and more so, since he arrived in oz 18 months ago, working immediately and paying half the bills. Fingers crossed anyway.

unfortunately, it is too common and there is a loophole in the immigration system whereby scammers only need to impregnate their victim in order to receive a permanent visa. I was targeted in that way and whilst it might seem like a great thing- that now my child will get to see her father..I would much prefer if that wasn't the case as I'm quite certain her father is actually a bona fide sociopath worst case scenario, pathological liar at best. There is no way I can entrust him with the care of our child. As for child support, he hasn't contributed a cent in 4 years and because with this visa he gets instant newstart allowance, he will only have to pay a negligible amount of support $300 a year. It's a joke.
Anyway! would love to connect with anyone else whose partner turned out to be a scammer or who might have some advice on how to take this further? I provided dept of immigration with evidence of his scams (he's still scamming other women here) and I suspect his case may have been denied initially but then successfully appealed to mrt. pretty sure i'm at the end of the line, but if anyone has suggestions, love to hear them!

We should go pay Peter Dutton (new immigration minster) a visit chicken999. He is not far away

It truly amazes me they can still grant PR to people that abuse their wives! Geez!

The bad ones ruin it for others. I can see how anyone married to someone from a risk country would have doubts.

You're exactly right.. MRT need to allow the ex-sponsor to testify or provide information..particularly when there is a child involved! Not knowing anything about your ex's visa situation is very stressful when trying to work out whether to allow visitations etc. What do you tell your child?!

In my situation, our relationship was on/off for 5 years. He got me pregnant straight away in Ethiopia and we got engaged so that we could apply for prospective marriage and give our relationship a chance. I broke it off a few months into the pregnancy as I had doubts about him being genuine- found discrepancies in what he was saying etc but because I wasn't there, it was easy to blame miscommunication due to his written English not being as good as his spoken English and it being generally harder to communicate when not there in person. I always knew there was a chance that he could have been scamming me, but hoped for our child's sake that he wasn't and thought the possibility of being a family united in Aus was worth the risk. It wasn't!!! it's been a nightmare because in order to get his visa, he had to start mediation and court process to show he was serious about being here for his kids, even though he isn't and has harassed me non stop to build up a call log to show his commitment etc. it's been super stressful.

I actually hate posting online about this because I don't want to give any other potential scammers ideas about how to get instant PR!!

I really do want to petition the minister for immigration about the issue..i'm seeing my local MP about it soon and would love to get in touch with others who also want to bring this issue to light!
