Time apart is hell, dan. I have done it so many times now and it never gets easier BUT the first little bit is the hardest then you get used to it (to an extent) once you find out good ways to communicate and spend time together. Our relationship was like this: 3 months together, 3 months apart, 2 weeks together, 3 months apart, 8.5 months together, 9 months apart, 5.5 months together, 4 months apart, 12 months together... not sure how long the next stint will be.

So as you can see, we are 'old hat' at this separation business. We chatted every evening via skype. This is a must! The telephone is inadequate. You'll feel much better when you can see their face. My partner and I would make plans to cook together on the weekends (the same meal- lame I know but it was nice) via skype. We watched movies together over skype. Sending one another letters is really nice. It always feels good to get something from the other person in the mail, something personal that is a little more concrete than an email or telephone call.

Time apart is HORRIBLE. I am certainly not denying it but it is at least, survivable. Make sure you do nice things together over skype and don't always talk just about how much distance sucks. Try to be positive- it will help you both. I only say this in case there is a possibility that you do have to spend some more time apart in the meantime. There are plenty of people here who will commiserate with you I'm sure (I'm one of them!). I hope you get a faster solution sorted but in the meantime try to make the best of a bad situation.

Having said all of that, my partner is going away tomorrow for work for two nights and I'm already starting to sulk!

*Edit: just remembered that you said you had a similar history...so I guess you know all the tricks. I know you get to the point where you think "when will we finally be together permanently?!" I think that all the time. I will leave this post up though just in case it helps anyone else. Good luck to you and your partner, dan. We will also be applying from Berlin...

thanks for your posts miniature mouse, it is appreciated

the student exchange from a german uni idea is an excellent one, thanks! i will get her to look into it... and we will look for other options too. nannying courses seem quite cheap.

yeah we have spent maybe 6mo apart over the last 2yrs... but we are not used to it! we do all the little tricks like you said and often do the dinner one, altho it is often me cooking dinner and her shouting tips/ingredients/etc to me while i cook! have not done the movie one tho..! hehehe. if you can find a way of applying that isn't through berlin i would recommend it, they seem to take ages.

Unfortunately we have no choice but to apply for Berlin. It's not such a big deal for us though as I have to return to Australia in October any (as my visa expires) and my partner has a contract with his work until March next year, so even if the visa were granted sooner we'd be apart a minimum of 5 months anyway but probably longer as my partner will have to move out of the apartment, etc. I just hope the visa doesn't take more than 6 months :s

if i were you i would apply asap?? at least you will have certainty.

plus, your partner might have a contract but if he is moving to australia then it doesn't really matter then, does it? he can just walk away?

and anyway, we have decided to apply for an e676.. emailed berlin today to ask for their blessing. this time apart sucks balls.

We were assigned a C/O yesterday and she asked my husband to go for his medical and xray. He also has to do a HIV test. I'm hoping that means he may get a permanent visa. He is doing these tomorrow.
