You can't travel internationally on an expired passport. Many countries require your passport to be valid for several months prior to expiry, but that may not apply when travelling to your home country.

It is up to the airline. Generally they ask for at least 6 months on the passport.

However since you are returning to your home country and is not a return flight (assuming I understood correctly) you may be right.

I would be contacting the airline and ask them.

Like what's been mentioned, it depends on the airline to see whether they will let you board the plane. You will only need the HK Id card to get past custom when you get back to HK. If you are planning on coming back to aus, then you will definitely need a new passport

Might be an idea to get a new one. I know Australia does an express service in the UK to RENEW passports, so your country may do the same thing. Renewals are usually quicker than lost/stolen or new passports and you migh be able to get it done in time. Check with your embassy
