Driver's License

I arrived to Sydney from Lebanon over 2 months ago on a permanent residency visa, I lost my driver's license (from Lebanon) here in Sydney. I have been trying to get a replacement from Lebanon ever since, but it seems complicated. My question is, since I have read somewhere that I ought to get the NSW License within 3 months of arriving, what happens if we cross the 3 months period, I would not be able to get a license?

If I am to get a license without having my original license, how would that work, would I have to stay 4 years on a Learning License and then apply for the P? Are there no considerations to the fact that I am 30 and I had a license before (something I guess I cannot officially prove).

Hi,

That 3 month period just means that you can only drive using your homecountry's license for that time, after which you need to exchange it for a NSW license.

Unless you get another copy of your license, I'm assuming you'll have to start from scratch like any Australian teenager

To get a Learner license you just need to pass a written test.

You are lucky that you're over 25 years old. Usually teenagers have to keep their learner license for a year, and they also must complete 120 hours of supervised driving. You are exempt from this rule.

How do I get my learner licence?
How do I get my P1 driver licence?

If you get your Lebanese license, you should follow this procedure to convert it to a NSW one:

Permanent visa holders and New Zealand citizens
So does it mean I can just get the L and then directly (without waiting any period) go for the P
?

After you cross the 3 month period you simply won't be able to drive, does not affect your ability to convert to a NSW driver's licence.

I'd suggest instead of getting a replacement, why don't you try and get a letter from the Lebanon transport authority to state that you hold a valid driver's licence? It'll save you all the trouble.

+1 to SarahM's comments too, you don't have to wait, just straight to P.

I've also posted an article on tips on passing the Driver's Knowledge Test and Driving Test if you want to read them, here: Converting Your Overseas Driver's Licence to a NSW Driver's Licence - THE JUMPING KOALA

Mark, this is another very old thread. Often posters don't return to the forum after their visa issues have been sorted. So there's seldom much use in posting after so much time.

He was a spammer, maggie-may. He had four posts, all about that driving school. I banned him and deleted his posts.
