Australian license on 820

Hello all, its been a while since ive logged in, been enjoying my stay here in Australia for the last year and a half. So my question today is about getting a license. Ive been driving on my American license for the past year and a half and tried to get my Australian license while i was on my PMV, but now that I am on the 820 can I get it? I rang the RTA today and they said if your a permanent resident or been here for 6 months you can get it. Well my wife and I went to the USA for Christmas so the 6 months is a no go, but is an 820 visa considered a permanent visa? I got into TAFE courses only after i received my 820 so I am thinking yes,but am hoping someone will know.
Thanks in advance
Brian

Every time I see RTA in confuses me because in QLD it is rental tenancy authority lol.

Anyway ... I thought CG went and swapped her license over when she was still on a PMV but I am not 100% sure.

Maybe shoot her a PM incase she doesn't see this thread.

I changed my Drivings License while being on a Visitor Visa in Victoria.
It wasn't a problem at all.

Hi Brian,

Not sure if this helps, but I got my Australian Driver's License while I was on my Tourist ETA (now on a Bridging Visa waiting for my 820). Prior to that I was here under a WHV. Shouldn't be a problem. I am in VIC by the way.

Yep, I swapped my license over just fine on a PMV, after I had been here for six months. They let me keep my international license, though. I can still choose to surrender my NSW license and go back to driving on my international license until I'm a Permanent Resident, if I want. I just chose to get an NSW license for ID purposes as I was about to change my name and I thought it would make the process easier (it did).

You just need to have been onshore for 6 months. I finally got around to changing my Belgian licence to an Aussie one when I was on my BVA - the only thing is that until you get the 801 VISA you can only get a 1 year licence. They won't issue the 5 year one until you are a permanent resident

They probably won't let you get an NSW licence if you went back to the USA at Christmas. They're pretty anal about the 6-month rule from what I've experienced.

820 isn't considered a permanent visa (I've argued with them over that fact), so in RMS' eyes, you have to have been here continuously for 6-months since your last entry.

If you want a licence, try moving to a different state, as they don't seem to mind as much. Otherwise, just keep using your american licence.

Amazing how it different it is.
I applied for ( in Melbourne) a Driving License 2 days after I arrived on a e-visitor visa.
The guy didn't ask for my visa status or anything like that.
I was approved on the spot

I got my Australian license about a week after arriving on a 457 visa with no issues. I'm in Victoria, and it will differ state by state.

I'm also in Victoria and I went to VicRoads today. I have been here for 3 months and am on a Bridging Visa now. I had to make an appointment and I go back in 2 weeks, but I'll be all set then.
