I would like to hear from those people ONLY.

If you were in Australia (on a tourist Visa) at the time the decision was ready to be made and were asked to leave by Diac so that decision could be made.

Ok, so you went to your home country (or elsewhere) and while you were there, did DIAC want your passport in their possesion at any time for the approval?

Heres why I am asking.
My Thai wife is in Aus on T.V right now. She goes home in Dec and I understand that her 309 will be ready before then, so Diac will contact us and ask her to leave the country so the decision can be made. We intend to go to Thailand for a couple of days and then to China for a holiday before she enters Australia on her new 309 visa. The problem here being that if Diac want her passport for processing we will not be able to go to China

Hello there!! I was granted a visa last week 28th October 2011. I went to Oz on a tourist visa at the beginning of August and stayed there till 25th October. On 16th September I got a phone call from my CO saying that the visa is ready to be granted but I need to be outside of Australia. I asked her if I could be granted the visa when I am back home in Poland that is 26th October and she said that it was no problem. All I needed to do was to send my passport to the Berlin office. I was going to send the passport last week but just before I went to the post office to send it I got another phone call from my CO and she wanted to know whether I had sent the passport already or not. She was happy to know that I had not, as the procedures had changed and I was no longer asked to do so as I was granted an electronic visa ( yes, partner visa 309)!!! So in my case it was really nice and quick. Hope it helps you a bit.
