It is only a problem if you are providing it as evidence. If you don’t then no issue.

Declaring a spouse makes no difference to your refund or payment you make.

We just provided the page from the tax return showing each other listed as a spouse.

I am not even sure the ATO would amend the tax return when it doesn't change the outcome.

The worry for people is if they have received any benefit from Centrelink based on being declared single and not as partners.

I know that Immigration, Centrelink and the ATO share information, and that Centrelink are heavy on partnered people who declare as single to obtain more benefits.

However, with no benefits claimed, you would be OK.

If I was in your situation, and concerned, I would contact ATO by letter, and see what they say. I wouldn't waste time paying an Accountant to change any returns yet.
