Opportunities to immigrate through the Merchant Navy

Hi, I am a 25 year old trainee Deck Officer in my final year with Zodiac Ltd working deep sea, with no offshore experience, yet prior to this I have 3 years deck hand fishing experience. I am due to qualify in August 2013. My girlfriend is an early childhood (pre primary school) teacher of 4 years and we are both looking into immigrating to Australia from the UK.

We have lived together for over 12 months which appears to be the requirement as a de facto partnership. We have been looking into applying for the Skilled Immigration Visa but are unsure whether we can include my employement in the points assessment, as i have not yet qualified. Do you know if we would both qualify to migrate on her points alone or do we need to wait until I am qualified and have work experience before we can begin the process or does my training count towards it?

As this is a lengthy 18 month process we are considering coming over on a Working Holiday Visa in the hopes of getting sponsored. Is this likely to happen through the merchant navy and if so do you know how I would go about getting further information on this and also whether or not there would be the opportunity for me to get sponsored to work offshore?

Thank you for your help
