what exactly is a temporary residency visa?

Hello,

When a defacto visa is approved and you are given a temporary residency visa... what travel and work rights do you have? I understand that it is 2 years before you can apply for the second part. What if during those 2 years you and your partner decided to live abroad? Just because we want permanant residency for both of us doesn't necessarily mean that we want to live in this country all our lives. So would extensive travel abroad effect getting the 2nd stage part successfully. Thanks in advance.
