changing from a tourist visa to sponsored work visa

My american husband and I intend on going to australia with his son to meet my family. We are going to have our ceremony there and see if him and my stepson could live in australia. If he is on a tourist visa and someone offers him a job whilst there as he is in construction. Could he change from a tourist visa to a sponsored work visa? I dont want to do the wrong thing and we can flly to NZ if he needs to leave the country but have read so many things and we dont want to have to pay for visa after visa after visa.
