FYI for you guys......I called today and here's what I got -

Spoke to a really nice lady (who sounded Canadian, not Australian...which was kind of funny to me - as I figured most Australia Embassy employees would be Australians..!)
- anyway - told her my partner visa was in process, needed to know my restrictions on travel via tourist visa whle in process, didn't know my case officer, etc etc.

She advised...yes, I can travel on an ETA -- but to keep in mind, tourist visas are not meant to be used to ride out the waiting period of a partner visa. She then wanted to know my specific travel dates -- told her I had not yet booked because wanted confirmation from them it was okay but it was to be end of Sept./ first of Oct. She asked how long I planned to stay - a month? I said I would be staying the max time allowed - 3 months - as it is a LONG journey from the US to Aus! She said that would be fine - but I need to call back when I have my travel dates so she can note my file for my case officer.

I then asked if could have my case officer's info - and she said no - it was too early in my application process and that the CO would be the one to contact me if necessary, not vice-versa. That was somewhat frustrating. And then she also made sure to cover all bases and tell me that COs were not required to contact applicants when they are about to make a decision on application...and as you know, if you apply offshore, you must be offshore when approved. She did follow that with - most COs, however, do stay in contact with the applicant if they know the applicant is traveling or in Australia at decision-making time.

So bascially there is a chance that something could go awry and I happen to get a CO who is not the norm and never contacts me -- and there would be a slight risk if I show up in the system with a current ETA visa, the real visa would be kicked out, null and void......which I shudder to think about....some small glitch messing up the entire thing..............

Sigh.

I still plan to travel down -- and I am going for the max time I can --- I guess I will just begin calling them every 3wks or so to try to get an update if I don't hear from my CO. Now the problem becomes booking a return ticket or not .... was just going to do a one way and then my partner and I would leave Australia when I needed -- not really coming all the way back to the US unless absolutely necessary. Might be necessary now.

When the application gets approved, is it possible to fly to NZ instead of flying all the way back to the states?

As far as I know, you can fly anywhere as long as you leave the country....NZ was definitely on the radar as it's closest.

My concern is - If my partner visa is not approved within the 3 month window of my tourist visa, then maybe I would have to come back to US. I am not sure if I can leave Australia for a few weeks on vacation w/ my partner - and come right back in the country for another 3 months while waiting on partner visa approval. Just don't want any red flags raised by doing something I'm not supposed to do.

Atlanta Girl, have you heard anything from the Embassy recently? It's been almost two months since we applied, but still nothing from them. Not surprising, lol.

Hi Katz....what timing you have....have not had a chance to update yet but - last night before bed, something prompted me to check my gmail account -- and I could not believe it when I saw it - they granted my visa yesterday!!!!!!!!!!

Of course I screamed and cried and freaked my dog out -- as it was nearly midnight and all was quiet! Immediately called my honey and we've both been beside ourselves with excitement and relief.
I feel a bit delirious actually....probably from lack of sleep! I was too keyed up to fall asleep...and now I'm at work trying to struggle through the day! But whatever...my last day at work is next week - and I'm on a plane to Oz at the end of the month.
SO HAPPY!!!!!

Total processing time for me -- 15 weeks exactly.

I hope yours is just around the corner. :-)

WOW! That's AMAZING, AG. It's so weird... I had this strange urge to ask you how you were going (hence the random post today), and you reply with awesome news. Many congrats to you and your honey! We shouldn't be too far behind you guys, then. Although... we didn't submit a medical with the application (he was told to wait until requested, if needed). So I have a feeling we'll be waiting a little longer. Did you wait to submit the medical?

Anyhoo - excellent news! <3

Hi Katz....yes, I did submit medicals w/ my application. I pretty much frontloaded as much as possible -- the only thing missing at time of submission was FBI check - it was in process though - and I got it to them about a month later.

I think I'm still in shock that I no longer have to stress out about the visa ... now it's just stressing out about this massive move and major change in every single area of my life!

Back to packing. I'll keep checking here to get updates from you!

We submitted only what the checklist required, no medical, etc. At the time I thought about frontloading everything just to get it all over with, but I was nervous that the medical would be incomplete or we'd submit outdated information. It's frustrating because we know that it helps speed things up. It would be an expense mistake to make. Gah.

I'll definitely keep you updated. Which part of Australia are you moving to? Good luck with packing!
