My second stage letter from DIAC stated that if I were to leave Australia during the time my second-stage processing was being considered I needed to call them.

My dad is ill, and I need to see him as often as I can (back to the US). I submitted my second stage info at the end of February 2012. I was in the US from the end of March until the beginning of June. I called DIAC before I left, and called them again the instant I came back into Australia.

It does not appear that this caused any delay in their consideration of my Sub-class 100. I checked with them via telephone last week, and everything is still just waiting to be processed.

Until you get your second-stage letter, you are free to leave and come back to Australia. After you turn in your second-stage documents, you'll need to call them if you leave Australia.

Hope this helps.
