Stuck at the last hurdle

The final thing I need to submit for my partner application is health checks, but to do the checks I need to take a current passport. Immigration has my passport (they requested I send it earlier in the process). Since then it has expired (end of last year). If I can get it back I can extend it without having to go home (I'm in Aus), but my case officer has not responded to my emails requesting my passport back, despite my explanations of why I need it (to extend it so I can take a current passport to my health check). Now the time I've been given to do the health check is almost up and I've not been able to do anything. Anyone had something similar happen? Any advice?

I didn't think they asked for actual passports at Dibp anymore, I thought they just want colour scans for the visa?
Guess all you can do is tell your CO you can't do the medical till they send the passport back!
