Beware what documents you carry on visitor visa, maybe FedEx some?

I would also apply for all the Police checks too, they normally only valid 12 months but they may take awhile to get.

Good point about the paperwork.
Concerning the police checks. I was considering doing that (I need to ask for them from 4 countries!) but I was worried that they would expire before the visa is granted. Also, I will need the FBI police report (which has the longest processing time) but I can't find anywhere to get my finger prints taken properly where I am. We tried to do that ourselves with my husband but didn't manage to get a single finger print correctly done let alone the ten of them twice on 1 sheet of paper. We think it might be easier to get that done in Australia. I wasn't planning to get a police report from my home country (Algeria) as I've been living abroad for almost 12 years. Any idea if they would still ask for one?

You should check out the DIBP approved FBI channelers if you're American. Takes about a week or less once they get your stuff.
