6 Month Visa travel question? If anyone knows the answer please help

Hi all,
So my partner and I are planning on traveling to New Zeeland for a week in September before my visa expires. We are planning on buying our tickets in a few days and my question is.
Do I need to buy a one way ticket to New Zeeland? and then by a return ticket back from New Zeeland?
Will it create and issue with immigration if I have return ticket back to Australia for a week later? We obviously want to be on the same flights.
My visa is good for 6 month increments and I cannot enter after 7 December 2016.
I guess I am still a little confused on how the expiry date works. My 6 months expires in the beginning of September. As soon I leave Australia and come back in will I receive a new expiry date? Also I only have conditions of no work and no study beyond 3 months
Thanks
Lisa

You will need onward/ return tickets for NZ and I recommend you have the same when you return to Australia.

Your visa will tell you the maximum periods you can stay on each arrival and when you have to make your last entry.

HI Nick,
What do you mean by onward return tickets? is that the same as round trip tickets? or tickets too and from? The maximum period I can stay on each arrival is 6 months which is says on my immi account. So my first expiry day is in the beginning of September not to enter after 7 December 2016. So I guess I am asking after I leave the country in September if and when I come back in prior to 7 December will I have another 6 month visa. My immi account states multiple entry for 6 months at a time?
Thanks
Lisa

New Zealand (not Zeeland) will likely not let you enter unless you have a ticket already purchased to leave the country again, so you'd need a return ticket back to Australia or onward ticket to another country. Their website is down at the moment so I can't check, but it's likely US citizens need the onward/return ticket in order to be granted a visitor visa upon entry. I know that's the case for Canadians.

Nick is also suggesting that Australia would likely also prefer you to already have a ticket purchased to show you intend to leave Australia at some point before your visitor visa expires.
