Smile Applying for 820- Do I need an Aus National Police Check?

Hi!

I am an American, my bf is Australian. We've been together for 2 years living in the US and moving to QLD in July. We are in the process of gathering everything we need for the defacto visa and saw that a national police check is necessary not only in the US, but also Australia. Is this something we BOTH need to do in Aus? And if so, since I would need to do one, would I be able to start this request prior to our move or would it need to be done onshore?

Any help would be great!!

Thanks,
Krista

As far as I know, you only need to provide a police check if you've lived in Australia for 12 months before you apply (not the 12 months DIRECTLY before, just any 12 months).

Additionally, your sponsor will only need to provide certificates if there are children of the relationship, to my knowledge.

However, as processing takes a long time and police certificates are only valid for 12 months, most people seem to be waiting until their CO requests it before applying for and submitting a police certificate.

I was outside of Australia for 13 months. 9months of it in Kenya and the other travelling through East Africa. The migration agent i consulted told me to get one from Kenya and to submit copies of the stamps in my passport...

Well thats not correct afaik. I've seen it stated frequently, you only need police checks in each country you've spent 12 months or more in. Not aware of any exceeptions to that?
