Sponsored family visa - Xmas holiday

I have a bit of a vague query and I couldn't find the answer anywhere on here (first time poster, long-time lurker, by the way!). Bear with me, I may be asking questions with very obvious answers!

My fiance's aunt has lodged a sponsored family visa (679) for him to come out at Christmas time for a two-week holiday. I know the DIAC website stated that in order to make the Christmas cut-off period, it needed to be lodged by Nov 2, but we weren't able to send it off until Nov 19th, when we had received all of his paperwork and he had approval from work to go on holidays.

Is there any chance at all it will still be approved before the Christmas holiday, or is that wishful thinking? Also, do you normally get any notification of receipt of application for this kind of visa? His aunt hasn't received an email or phone call yet, and neither has he, so I'm worried it hasn't even been looked at.

And my last two vague questions are, are his chances of being accepted slightly better due to only requesting a two-week holiday? He has included a letter from his work giving him 15 days off - but it specifies that the start date of that 15 days is Dec 19th, which is the day we'd ideally like him to fly out. Does that mean if it doesn't get processed before Dec 19th, DIAC might reject it on the basis of the time period he wished to holiday has since gone past?

Apologies for the rambling, it's all very confusing and new to me
