Tourist Visa - Anyone had a call from the embassy???

Hi everyone,

My Fiance in Bali applied for a PMV in October. She then applied for a tourist Visa to come to Australia on the 7th of December. A few weeks ago on the 21st of December she missed a call from the embassay in Jakarta and when she was finally able to speak to someone they advised her an "officer" had called her but the officer was on leave until the 7th of January but as far as they could tell all the documents we submitted for the PMV were ok and the call may be about an interview. (She has not been assigned a CO yet but has done medical and police checks)

Anyway, The turnaround at the moment for the tourist visa is about 15 days however it has been longer than that and she has not heard a thing and she knows people that applied for tourist visas to Aus many days after her and their TV's have already been granted.

So she e-mailed the embassy to ask why the tourist visa was taking so long and if they required any further information and today she received an e-mail back stating this....

"Your application is currently still being processed. The case officer has
tried to contacted you regarding your application on 21 December 2012. She will contact you again after returning from leave"

Now we are really confused and not sure if the missed call was about the PMV or the Tourist visa. I have never heard of anyone being called by an embassy in relation to a tourist visa, they either approve the applications or refuse it don't they????

Has anyone experienced the same thing? We are going crazy wondering what this is about and wondering if with their response today they are confusing the visas she has applied for.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you haven't been assigned a CO and the email enquiring about the whereabouts of the TV came back with that email then the call as about the TV.

I have heard of people being called for follow up on TV's but it is not common. I would take it as a good sign that they are trying to discuss the visa with you, not just refuse it. There could be many reasons that they are calling...one of the main reasons that TV's are refused is if you have not been able to show enough evidence for reason to return to your home country once the visa is up. You should focus on having a job or family or school or property to return to. They want to make sure that you are not trying to short circuit the PMV process and get into the country and plan never to leave.

I would suggest having a good search around to see if there are any other post on this topic.

Hi Moose,

When my husband applied for a tourist visa in 2011, we were called by the embassy and asked to attend an interview together. Like Mel says, it was indeed to determine that he had enough reason to return to his country and that he wasn't trying to circumvent the normal partner visa process.

Full story is in this post.

Just thinking about this situation further, somethings seem a little strange.

My Fiance works and has worked for her employer for 6 years. She has a history of visa compliance when she visited friends in Europe and then again when she had a 3 month TV to come here to Australia last November. She returned to Bali prior to her visa expiration on both occasions.

Her friend (who had never been out of Bali) applied for a TV to Australia 4 days after my Fiance and had hers approved in a week and my Fiances brother applied for a TV to Australia a week after her and received news today the decision letter is ready for him to collect tomorrow.

Further to this, when she called the embassy about the missed call they did not mention the tourist visa only that her PMV documents looked fine and there seemed to be no issues there.

It seems strange that the person assessing her application for the TV would call her once 2 weeks after she lodged her TV application and then go on leave for almost three weeks and just leave her application hanging, especially when her application mentioned one of the reasons for coming here was that we were both invited to attend several events early in the new year (one which she has already missed)

But, it is indonesia and they do work very differently over there so i suppose we just continue to be stressed out and wait until she is called next week.

Oh....the stress!!!!

Try to just sit with the discomfort of not understanding rather than struggling and making it worse, if you can. I know that trying to apply logic with IMMI will often end up with you worked up and in a ball of tangled mess so best to try not second guess if you can help it.

I am fairly confident the call is about the TV. You dont have a CO yet so there would be no reason for anyone to call you. I think you struck someone who was bluffing their way through it when you rang the first time and the email was the really telling thing and yes calling and then going on leave is very possible...in more places that just Bali!!!

Question Some relief and some further confusion

Well......this all gets a little weirder.

After being advised by the embassy that she will get a call next week when the "officer" returns from leave, my fiance received a call this afternoon from the Australian Embassy in Jakarta.

After the responses to my posts in this thread were were preparing her for any possible questions about her recent Tourist visa application however the questions she was asked today seemed like a mix between tourist visa questions and questions about her PMV.

She was so nervous and freaked out that she didn't actually hear the persons name or for what reason they were calling her.

They asked her the following questions....(some of which are a little strange IMO). By the way these are not in any order.........

What is your fiances name?

Did you previously have a partner and for how long? (yes - 5 years)

Why did you get divorced?

Does you fiance have a previous partner? (yes) Was she also Balinese? (no - Aus)

How long was your fiance with his previous partner?

Have you met your fiances family members? (yes - some)

Why did your fiance leave his previous partner?

What is your job and where do you work?

How long have you known your fiance? (2 years, 8 months - in a serious relationship since August 2011)

How often does your fiance travel to bali (many times since August 2011)

Are you serious that you want to marry him? (yes)

Do you really want to live in Australia? (yes)

Have you ever lodged a partner visa in Australia before?????? (No)

Why do you want to go to Australia at this time? (holiday, meet other family members, invited to several family events, etc)

How long do you want to go to Australia for this time?

What will you do after this trip? Where will you go after this trip? (straight back to Bali to await the decision on my PMV)

Have you been to Australia before? (yes - once for three months in November 2011) Did you stay with your fiance during that visit? (yes)

All of the above questions that she was asked (and a few more that she can't remember) seem like a mix of questions relating to her TV application and her PMV application.

The call ended with the person thanking her for here time and for answering all the questions and my fiance was still so shocked and nervous she just said good bye and did not think to ask the person what visa these questions relate to or if her TV will be approved.

As good as it is that she received the call before having to stress out all weekend this call has only freaked us both out even more due to the context of the questions she was asked as we still cannot work out what visa application these questions relate to.

Remembering that she applied at the end of October and has yet to be given a CO....unless that was him today and she didn't hear him state that .

Moose I am still convinced that this call was in order to give you the TV. The reason they asked you the other questions that "cross over" into the region of the PMV is that they want to establish that you are for real about the PMV as this links to the reasons that you have requested to come over for the TV (e.g. meet more family, attend special family events etc) so they would in my opinion be wanting to ensure that this was a legit PMV on a surface area as that is the premise for the TV and there is no one currently actively looking into the PMV to have any level of understanding as to if the basics of your PMV application are solid.

I think she did a great job. They expect people to be nervous and to answer a little nervously as a result. I would say that you could hear something soon....just stay strong.

Thanks again for your comments melandabdul, your feedback certainly helps me to make some more sense of all of this.

The good thing is we are very confident we have supplied all the required evidence to obtain both permits so I keep telling her that all we can do is be as honest as possible to those making these decisions about our lives and hopefully we will get what we pray for.

All the best to you :-)
