Australian driving licence on 309 Visa, NSW

Hey all,

I am moving to Australia this month on my 309 visa and will be moving to NSW. Do they consider a 309 visa a permanent one even it's a temporary visa?

The reason I am asking is because I read online that in order for me to get an Australian Drivers Licence, I need to have a permanent visa. Do I need to wait until I get my 100 visa before I can apply for an Australian Licence? You are only allowed to drive on an international drivers licence for a few months right?

I would love some clarification on this.

Thanks so much in advance!

Rick

The 309 is a temporary visa which allows you to enter (and re-enter) and remain in Australia until the permanent 100 (Class BC visa) is granted, or the 309 application is withdrawn.

Hey Ric,

Thank you for your reply. However, that wasn't what I was asking. I know what the 309 visa is, I was looking for information regarding an Australian Drivers Licence.

I read that NSW requires a permanent visa. Hence, I was asking what the deal is if you are on a 309 visa. Are you able to get an Australian Drivers Licence or do you have to wait till you get the 100 visa?

If you hold an overseas licence, you are allowed to drive the vehicles covered by your overseas licence in NSW indefinitely, as long as:

You remain a temporary overseas visitor.
Your overseas licence remains current...

That page also says:

If you’re a temporary overseas visitor (ie not an Australian citizen and not a permanent resident of Australia), you can choose to apply for a NSW licence if you wish.

Thank you for the reply, thats a very useful link!

Just one question, if you are on a 309 visa, are you considered to be a visitor? So everyone who hasn't got a permanent visa is considered to be a visitor?

Edit: Read the entire article you provided and it is clear now. Thank you so much for the info!

If you’re a temporary overseas visitor (ie not an Australian citizen and not a permanent resident of Australia), you can choose to apply for a NSW licence if you wish.

See Moving to NSW for the application requirements.

The following condition applies:

Your licence will show the letter Q in the conditions area on the front of the card. The accompanying text ‘Evidence of permanent residency status not provided’ will be printed on the back of the card.
