It goes anywhere from a couple of weeks to 8 weeks, depending on your documents or (in my theory) if you've had prior visa application record. I received my 457 in 3 weeks, with the help of a migration agent paid for by my AU employer.

When you send your application, make sure that you have all your documents ready (except health check, which you'll find out after hitting that Submit button. I remember sending up my travel and national ID documents, evidence of English language capability (e.g., IELTS results or certification from your uni stating that instruction was held in English), recommendation letters from current and previous employers, certified copy of transcript of Uni and High School records, proof of previous international travels/visa.

My application took longer because the results of my health exam was not submitted early enough by the clinic, but I received the grant after making a few calls with the health examiners to have it released to DIBP if there were no issues with my results.

Hope this helps and good luck with your application!
