I would just try it in a different shop again. In my experience, Optus is the worst when it comes to paperwork, followed closely by Telstra. When I (or rather, my partner) got a Telstra contract last year they were really unhelpful in one shop, wanting to know heaps about my partners income etc and being really hesitant about giving him a contract because he was unemployed at that stage.
So we said we were going to think about it, left the shop, went to another one and said my partner was self-employed (he has an ABN) and they were super nice and everything was sorted in 10 minutes! I think it also really depends a lot on who you are talking to...

Yes definitely! I know our Vodafone people in our suburb are awesome and very friendly and sociable to customers. They did want to know all about my income but it was not an issue in a negative way. Good luck and let me know how it goes! I'd love to hear if any other temporaries have had problems with phone contracts, too.

I had absolutely no issue getting a contract with a telco on my provisional visa. to be honest I dont recall them even asking to see my passport or visa
