Australia Visa to a child born in Australia to PR holders

Hi,

Our child is born in Australia and we(parents) are Australian Permanent residents at the time of birth. I understand that the child will automatically become Australian citizen and can apply for Australian Passport.

However, I've decided not to obtain Australian passport. Instead, I'd like to apply for Indian passport for my child. We are planning to go back to Indian and stay there for 5 years.

Can any one help me to understand:
1. what type of visa should be obtained for my child to enter back to Australia in future?
2. Whether the child will be able claim Australian citizenship any time?
3. Do we have to renounce our child's Australian citizenship to obtain Indian passport?
4. Can the child be given any special visa to enter Australia?

Thanks!!!

I think your child would need an Australian passport to enter Australia. Have you tried the option of getting an AU passport and an Overseas Citizens of India card instead?

Well, The reason why I wanted to get Indian Passport is to give my child a chance to decide what he wants.

Upon further research -

"The Constitution of India forbids dual citizenship or dual nationality, except for minors where the second nationality was involuntarily acquired. Indian authorities have interpreted the law to mean a person cannot have a second country's passport simultaneously with an Indian one"

So our child is eligible for dual citizenship until he reach 18 years of age. He will need to keep either Indian citizenship or Australian citizenship.

In this case, since we will not get Australian passport, the Australian govt provides Australian Declaratory Visa(ADV) to its citizens to travel on foreign passport and is valid for 5 years.

You may also wish to have a look at how long you are allowed to live outside of Australia before loosing your Aust. residency status.

The child is an Australian citizen by birth so there is no question of losing it unless at age 18, the child decides to keep Indian citizenship that implies renouncing Australian citizenship.
