Thank you! Yes, she's gorgeous. Not that I'm biased.

She's just a "domestic gray shorthair." Nothing fancy. I think she looks a bit like a Russian Blue, though. I love them.

Nelly, you SO did not fail Nero. Not even close. You made a really, really tough decision that broke your heart to keep Nero safe and loved. Anyone who faults you for that is just not thinking straight. Given your situation, I might have made the same choice. No way would I ever let my baby outdoors. She just isn't made for that. She gets terrified when there's snow falling outside, lol.

I bought my 2 dogs, 3 cats and 2 guinea pigs to the US from Australia 3 years ago. They had a huge trip (Sydney-Singapore-London Heathrow-Houston) but they all fared very well. Only one of my guinea pigs had an issue - he got a minor respiratory infection, but it was easily fixed with a short course of antibiotics (he had always had a chronic respiratory condition).

And now we will be getting ready to do it all again! We will have 3 dogs (my husband's dog plus my two) and 3 cats (mine), but no guinea pigs this time (one died a month ago at nearly 6yrs old, the other is still in great health, but Australia won't allow guinea pigs to be imported. Our vet has agreed to take him when we leave).

Since we will have 6 animals - we are crossing everything we have that AQIS implements a shortened quarantine period! Not only would it lessen the expense, but I also think it would better for the animals (and owners!) if they could be reunited sooner.

There was no way I would leave my animals behind when I moved here, and there is no way I will leave them here when I go home. My mama dog was a rescue from a her previous owner who was going to shoot her - I figured out about a week after I got her that she was in-pup. One of her pups came back to me after ending up in the pound - skin and bones, full of fleas and so timid with everyone - but when I went to get her she took one look at me and jumped all over me. I don't know if she remembered me or not, but there was no way I would let her go again! My mama cat was a pregnant stray that I took pity on and I kept two of her three kittens (my grandmother took the other one).

Even though they are all a little older now, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't handle the trip back, based on the fact they did so well coming over.

Thank you so much I kind of needed that. Whenever I read about people who did bring their animals "because they would never leave them" I just feel horrible... I didn't want to leave him, I wanted to have him with me until his very last day on earth, I wanted to be one of those people who could say "I'd never leave my baby behind"... but I had to look at the circumstances. We'd be living (and still are) with my parents in-law for a long time - years. They love me but they have their ideas about animals... that they are wild even when the are domesticated and they have to be outside. I even had to talk them into desexing their own animals after several unwanted litters. I didn't want my Nero to live by rules he couldn't play with - because there was no way in hell everyone who uses the doors in this house would have made sure Nero stayed in and safe. It's just a fundamental difference in ideas I guess.

I couldn't do that to him. If he had come with me and ended up like Aly (the cat I lost a few months ago to a car) I would never forgive myself. And he'd already been hit by a car which is how he ended up at the shelter where I got him. I just couldn't risk it. I'd rather he has a long, safe life than to put him in this situation just to keep him with me. I'll never know if that was the right call because I'm not him, but I have to tell myself it is every day.

One of my in-laws' cats (a female who was half stray and has since disappeared) had just had a litter of kittens in their backyard when we got to Australia... of course suddenly they were nobody's responsibility... they were just running around terrified and nobody wanted to do anything about it. I invested hours every day for months (well, I was unemployed!) taming them and now they are my new babies. They can't replace Nero but they were a good way to realize that Nero is safe, and I now had the time and money to take in other kitties who needed my help.

These are my cats here...

The three kittens I tamed - Robbie, Alexander (Aly) and Max (Maximus) -

We lost Aly he was my baby boy. This is our four cats (when we still had Aly) and my father in law's cat waiting for me to come in and feed them:

And this is our Boris - born to the same mother around the time when my partner and I started talking (two years ago) - they were gonna take him to a shelter but I asked them to hold onto him for me... and they did he has a curly tail! He's a little genetic freak and we love it -

I just have to keep telling myself... Nero is happy and safe and the money we didn't spend on flying him over has now gone to rescuing and taking in these fellas. We desexed them, got them their shots and also help my father in law out when we can with the vet bills for his dogs.
