Re: the quarantine change -- I want to say it's happening in July? I can't remember for sure, nor find the page where I saw the legislation change information originally.

There was talk last year of AQIS taking submission/recommendations to shorten the quarantine period from 30 days to 10 days.

I have not heard any further as to whether AQIS is going to implement these recommendations or not.

I would say that even if they did, it wouldn't be likely to happen within the next 3mths.

Nelly, what beautiful kitties (and your expression is hilarious in that pic, lol). I'm so sorry you lost Aly - he looks so sweet. The "right decision" when it comes to pets, in my opinion, is to always do what we think is going to keep them safest, happiest, and loved, and that's exactly what you did. Please stop beating yourself up over it. All of us are just doing the best we can with what we have, and that's exactly what you've done. *hug hug hug!*

I saw July on a couple of websites... Can't remember which, though

Hehe - another rodent fan! When I got a job in Germany a few years ago, I shipped my 7 pet rats from the UK to Frankfurt. Cost me a fortune..

Your pet pix are lovely too. Has Runty got a bit of German Shepherd in her?

Awww... some more lovely pet pix, loving this thread I'm glad you've got such pretty kitties now to replace Nero, Nelly. I'm sure nobody thinks badly of you for leaving him with people you knew well, who love animals.

What makes me angry (and I'm ashamed to say it seems to be an Australian thing) is seeing 'free to good home' ads in Gumtree saying things like "I've got a new job. I'm moving away. If somebody doesn't rehome this dog by the weekend I'm having him put to sleep". Not making any effort to find the animal a suitable new home; just using shock tactics to get rid of it as quickly as possible...

Wow! Seven rats That's dedication for you lol! People told me I was crazy, shipping all my animals here, since it cost more than I had paid for them (lol - the most expensive were the guinea pigs at $9ea lol, the dogs and cats were rescues plus offspring). But I don't care! They are my family, where I go, they go!

No, Runty has no German Shepherd. Dixie, the Red Cattle Dog, is her mother, and her father was a kelpie

I know, I HATE seeing that, too. People who are in by no means an extreme situation who just want rid of the animal enrage me - which is part of why I felt so bad about my decision. But really, who goes to a shelter and thinks "How likely is it I will fall in love with someone from the other side of the world within the next 10 to 15 years?"... nobody expects that or can expect it.

But people who clearly are not interested in where their pet ends up... make me very, very angry. To be honest, though - and I am NOT trying to rip on Australia AT ALL, but I do see a lot of more careless treating of pets here than I did at home. Maybe it is because in The Netherlands there is already lack of space so people are forced to think before they adopt... there aren't even kill shelters there! There is no need because it's kind of the norm to desex your animal if you don't want to take in the new generation, etc. Here, probably because there is more space and more wild animals, people seem less worried about it. Not everyone! But more than where I come from.

I just wanted to add to this thread - if you are a petowner trying to make this decision, here's my 2 cents.

It's been a year and four months since I left my Nero with family of one of my best friends. I just heard they renamed him and that he was sick for a while but is better now.

I bawled my eyes out in a bathroom stall just now (was at work when I got the message). The urge to fly back and steal him back is overwhelming, even over a year later.

If you have the choice, and your pet is your baby like Nero was to me, take your pet with you regardless of costs. For me the risk was too big but I believe I'll carry the sadness of leaving him for the rest of my life.
