Partner Visa 820 - Marriage certificate question

Hello! I'm trying to get the application together. I read that I need to provide a marriage certificate because I was previously married as well as proof of divorce. The thing is I only have a copy of my marriage certificate. I don't have the original; my ex misplaced it. Ordering a new one from California is a 6-month wait or more. Does anyone know if the marriage cert is absolutely necessary? Will a copy do? I don't see why proof of divorce can't also be proof of marriage! Please help.
Thanks in advance!

I've not been asked by my migration agent for a marriage certificate...only the proof of divorce - although I know people who have been granted 820 while still legally married to another person

I didn't go through this with my application so I don't know first hand. However, I think you could send your application with just the divorce paperwork and explain that you no longer have your marriage certificate but if required you can get one. I feel like legal documents proving a divorce are just as valid for proving that you were married. Is it possible that the checklist you were reading was requesting you send a marriage certificate for you current partner in the case that you are married?

Thanks, I will have to do that. Well the reason I thought I needed it was because on Part I- Document Checklist of form 47SP it says if you've been married, including previous relationships you need a certified copy of a marriage cert. And the next item is about divorce and a divorce decree.

I included a certified copy of my marriage certificate with my application . If u have a friendly jp just get hem to certify it as a true copy for u. They don't want original anyway

Thanks! I'll do that.
I'm handing in the application in person. Do you think perhaps they will certify it for me there?
