They were both right. It looks like the UN puts out a list of refugees and asks different countries to help -- but I don't think you can request a specific country.
If you do find an organization or individual in Australia, you can apply specifically for an Australian refugee visa. That was the visa in the first link I sent you.

See if you can contact asavic.org.au. They are a Syrian Association of Australia. Maybe they would help sponsor you?
