Don't know if they have made any more announcements of late re curtailing visas of specific categories Kris but as of March they've certainly introduced a priority system with a Critical Skills List - see our second sticky thread at top of section, and there were still some engineers showing on that.

But it was budget night last night and something could have been in budget papers for immigration - it'll pay to check immi site over next few days/weeks for any new announcements for government has indicated changes will be made based on conditions and situation is unemployment is expected to rise here just like in most countries.

If his engineering category is still on CSL or not, it could be an advantage for him to go for a state nomination and do a 176 application if possible, but then as anyone should appreciate, being a long way from home without a job could be worse than being home without one and a long way worse from having one.

EDIT Looks like they've done a little tuning or tightening the belt if you like, raising english standard required for trades/provisional visas and also a Job Ready test to be applied re trade occupation applications from January 2010.
