Question Concurrent Crew and Tourist Visa?

Hi All

Just a quick question:
I currently hold an air crew visa for entry into Australia but am planning on visiting some friends in Cairns next month. I was told I need to apply for a tourist visa as I can only use my crew visa to enter the country as cabin crew. However, one of my fellow crew members recently applied for a tourist visa and had his crew visa cancelled by the authorities! I'd like to avoid this happening at all costs as I love my flights to Australia, and fully intend to go back to work after this little vacation.

Is it possible to hold an air crew visa and tourist visa concurrently? And which one should I apply for? The 601 or the 600?

Thanks for any information you can provide!
