I assume you didnt get the 820 granted earlier in the process. And got the combined 820/801 at the same time now.

correct, we never got an 820 approval, we applied about 32 months ago and a few months back the CO asked for some updated evidence we were still together (recent bank statements etc etc) and we got some new stat decs too

then today we just got 801 approval!!!!

The 820/801 is essentially the same visa divided into 2 stages and really in most cases the basic criteria to get an 801 is to hold an active 820. So when they grant you an 801 they are satisfied with your application and grant you both the 820 and 801 in quick succession. 30 odd months is a bit of a wait but congrats nevertheless.

What's your partner's nationality? Did you guys submit by yourselves or through an agent?

Hi Nicoski,

I applied for my wife's 820 visa on 22nd APR 2018.
The 820 visa got granted on 1st OCT 2019. However, we didnt receive any emails from DOHA to apply for 801 visa.

Now that we have completed 2 years of applying for 820 visa, please suggest if we need to wait fof email from DOHA or start aplying for 801 visa.

Regards,
Ashish

Applied for my 801 on 11th April 2020, and will become eligible on 11th May (in 4 days)

820/801 applied for 11th May 2018, 820 granted 21st August 2019.

My saving grace is I actually work for the WA government sector, but they cant offer me any permanent work until I get my 801. Previously they nearly couldn't even offer me Fixed term contracts as I was still on my bridging visa. Luckily a WA government email address helps in getting a quick reply, and I was granted my 820 within an hour of sending that email to my CO.

This time won't be so lucky as there are no regulations for early grants in the event of needing it for a job.

I did get a generic reply stating that they can understand and sympathize with my situation due to covid and job security (my fixed term contract ran out 1st May and I was a little nervous) but they could only grant early in other circumstances. Come 11th May I might get lucky but I won't hold my breath. I managed to sweet talk head office to giving me a further 6 months fixed term contract, so I at least have a small bit of breathing room and 6months for a grant.

I am pretty sure they have transferred all overseas visa staff to work on the onshore visas, but with those who have gotten stuck within Australia and applying for the new temp visas to stay here legally, it might mean there is a slight delay.

Will update when I get the grant through

You do not need to wait. Not everyone gets the reminder. We didn't.

Just upload everything now. You are 801 eligible from 22 April 2020.
