Working holiday visa, Criminal Record ?

Hi, I'm a UK citizen and i have uncles and aunties who are living in Australia and have been for the last 20 years. I want to go on a working holiday and also visit them at the same time although, I'm 21 years old and i committed a silly common assault when i was 19 and served 2 months in jail (total sentence was 4 months but i served half the time.) I've not been in any trouble since then. Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on weather ill get a working holiday visa and how i should go about it ? Also would they refuse me by post in England or would they refuse me at the airport in Australia ? Many thanks

AndyP - this may matter since it was in the last couple of years. Ozzy is quite right, you fail character requirements only if you've been sentenced to 12months or more, however given the conviction was for assault, you recieved jail time and it was only a couple of years ago it might be an issue.

I'd pick the brains of a migration agent if I were you. You will most likley need to submit alot of character evidence to show it was just a silly mistake and how you are of good character.

I applied for my 1st WHV in 2011 and the 2nd WHV in 2012 - I did both online and each time it was granted just SECONDS after I lodged my online application (but I don't have any criminal records)

...would be great if each visa application would be so fast

Message Mark Northam on here - he may be able to give you some brief advice for free. Or Overseas Emigration, not sure how much advice you will get out of them for free though - they're based in Edinburgh.

I'm no expert, I just know of some people who have not been allowed over for this sort of thing. I think immigration normally like to see a bit more time passed. Its not to say its impossible - but I wouldn't recommend completing an online application. Opt for the paper version to load it with lots of evidence. It may be a waste of money and then you have a rejected visa to deal with in the future too!! Hopefully Mark can give you some advice.

Cool i will message these people when i wake up tomorrow thanks for the info.

Heres a little more about my situation if it will help ?

My offence was committed in March 2011 I'm planning on going to Australia if they accept my visa in January 2014. Nearly 3 years after and 100% clean record since. I could even if i really needed to delay my trip to July 2014.

I have no excuse for my actions at the time although I was going through a difficult period in my life with some family issues. I'm good friends with two district councilors here in Nottingham if they confirmed I was of good character would that make things easier ? I also could get up to five police officers who are friends of my father and have known me since i was a baby to confirm it was a one off and a mistake i wont make again. I'm not a bad person just made a mistake one time when i was younger and stupid.
