Question 864: Contributory Aged Parents Visa - Health Requirements

Hi there,

I am intending to sponsor the onshore contributory aged parents visa for my parents.
I have a couple of questions:
1. Do parents need to stay in Australia after submission until their visa is processed? Can they apply onshore and then temporarily leave Australia and return closer to processing time? They are currently on 3 months max stay visitor visa.

2. One of my parents has an existing functional disability due to a previous illness. How is the health requirement assessed? Will this disability be an issue for getting the visa?

thanks for your input

1)Your parents must be in Australia when they apply for this visa and when a decision is made. They could travel overseas in between if they have another valid visa that allows them to travel outside and return to Australia. See notes below.

2) You will require professional advice to answer this one.

When you lodged your application, you were granted a bridging visa if, when you applied:
  • you held a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884)
  • you held a Tourist visa (subclass 676) or Visitor visa (subclass 600) granted through ministerial intervention
  • you are a family member of a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 884) visa holder.
The bridging visa will come into effect only if your current visa expires. A bridging visa lets you stay in Australia while your subclass 864 visa application is processed.
If your current visa is about to expire and you were not automatically granted a bridging visa you should apply for one because you must be in Australia with the visa is decided.
