Can i type out the information instead of using ink

Now i know this may sound stupid but as we all know it says use ink to fill out application forms when applying for any visa. My friends and family are all basically asking the same question ( form 888 i had sent to them all via email) and they would like to fill it out on the computer and print it off and sign it obviously by hand. Do the immigration allow this or do they prefer it to be in ink.? Yehh i know it sounds stupid but hey .........
