Eligible NZ citizen and lots of other questions

Hi there

my fiancee and I have been together for coming up 9 years. He has dual citizenship NZ and Yugo and I am a permanent resident in NZ. We have both been living in NZ for ages (11 yrs for me and 13 yrs for him) but are considering a change in scenery.

I have a couple of questions related to getting a visa for myself. I could easily get NZ citizenship, however I am German and unfortunately Germany doesn't grant dual citizenship and I am reluctant to give up my European Union passport (we are still young and who knows where we will eventually end up) hence I will need a visa - right? Do you think the de facto visa (getting married in Jan next year) would be the best option? Also what makes an 'eligible' NZ citizen? Is the definition simply realated to police clearance?

Another question is around social security entitlement, in particular PPL. I see that OZ is only starting the scheme in 2011 do you have to be an Australian resident to be eligible? What are some of the other entitlements for Kiwis and NZ perm residents? I did have a bit of a squiz and see that we wouldn't be elgible for the unemployment benefit and super....

Thanks in advance

New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship (Temporary) Visa

Hi guys

looks like I answered my own question and thought it might be of interest to some other people. I had a minor meltdown when I found out that my partner is not deemed an 'eligible' NZ citizen (refer to this page for a definition http://www.iarc.asn.au/publications/pdfs/nzcitizens.pdf). However I am now fairly certain that I would be eligible under the New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 461). Does anyone have experience with this visa and can tell me if I am indeed eligible for this visa?

Had just been having a read of that document as I had not noticed you posted again, and though no direct experience other than going the other way and buying some property, it does seem you have a handle on it.

Your partner as a NZ citizen can come here and get medicare coverage and can bring you as family with the SC461 applied for, cheaper and more straightforward than the partner visas I'd expect.

No Social Security unless PR is attained and that can always happen in due course if you have a good job and can get the employer to sponsor you, a 457 visa being a stepping stone to the ENS visa - have a look under employer sponsored visas in the skilled stream.

And what btw is PPL - certainly not Private Pilots Licence!

Hi Wander

thanks for your reply I will have a look at the process of obtaining PR in due course. PPL is the paid parental leave scheme that I believe the Australian govt is introducing from Jan 2011. I would love a Private Pilot Licence though...but I suspect no government would provide me with funding to get one of those

Ah yes, I do believe there's been something mentioned/arranged re that though last I heard I think the government were getting dodgy what with the GFC.

I'd think it might come under the Social Security umbrella re PRs when it does come in.

I was fortunate enough to get the other PPL a long way back and with some company sponsorship of mining town clubs it cost next to nothing and was a good move.

thanks Wanderer, I have been attempting to work my way through the Aust Immi web page and then came across your posting here... you have helped me out no end... I was not familiar with the family pathway for my partner... I am a NZ citizen, have been here since 2001, but my partner is on a 12 month visitor visa and I want him to stay here, so this 461 could just fit the bill... THANKS!!!!
