Marry Australian on a working holiday visa?

Hi All,

Firstly a bit of background...

My girlfriend (Italian) and I (Australian) intend to marry in Australia next year. We are currently engaged, and have been living together for 12 months however only have evidence of this living arrangement for 6 months.
The plan next year is for my girlfriend to apply for a working holiday visa and together we do some travel around Australia (purchasing a van and be on the road for a number of months), supplementing our income along the way through fruit picking.
After this, we would like to get married on Australian shores and then return to Italy before the expiration of my girlfriends visa.
From Italy we would apply for a spouse visa offshore.

My questions are;

Would getting married on the working holiday visa be looked down upon?
Is this the right approach?
We know that we can apply for the temporary spouse visa, however as our trip next year is mainly travel orientated (and we only plan to stay in Australia for 1 year initially anyway) plus the application of a working holiday visa is a much simpler process than a spouse visa.

Any replies are much appreciated!

Cheers, Ben

Welcome to the forum Ben and shouldn't be a problem, especially in being engaged and together for quite a while before marriage.
There's no restriction as far as I know re someone marrying whilst on a WHV here and sounds like a great plan/time you could have.

Do it right weatherwise and you could have an endless summer, look at heading for Broome about April/May and you could earn some good money in pearls harvesting for a few months with a bit of luck if that appeals.
Do the top end by September/October and head over to Queensland and you'll pick up work on Atherton tablelands about then.
Plenty of Italians in NQ too, maybe even some rellies but whether or not you'll likely find plenty of Italian families on the land who'd no doubt be pretty hospitable I imagine to a lass from the home country and her Aussie fella.

Just check re the paperwork required and you could get that from State gov. of state you're going to do it in, http://www.greentree.com.au/overseas.pdf just being one celebrant who has put together some info you could use as a guide.

Good luck with it and imagine you'll have to do it all over again back in Italy.

I think you'll be fine bmorrice!

I would recommend though being aware of the visa requirements and trying as best as you can to make a paper trail for yourself for the "financial" aspects of the relationship. Where possible, pay with debit and credit cards, maybe even get one with both your names--that way, when the time comes, you can print out your statements and have actual proof of shared spending as you two toured australia together.

I think you'll be fine though, have fun guys!
