Travelling while waiting for the 820 visa

My work wants to send me to a conference outside Australia next month and I assumed because my working holiday visa is still active I wouldn't have to apply for a bridging visa B to travel yet. However when looking at the home affairs guidelines it says its "up to me" whether I decide to apply for the bridging visa or not. My 820 is very unlikely to be granted while I'm out the country, I've only been waiting a few months but is it better to apply for the bridging visa B anyway just in case?

It would depend on the expiry date of the WHV.

My working holiday visa doesn't expire until next August which is why I thought I'd be fine.

I wouldn't bother with a BVB then. It's not like you're going out and not flying in until the day or week before your WHV expires and you'd want a BVB just in case there's a delay or issue that prevents you from reentering Australia before the WHV expires. You're leaving next month and the WHV is valid until Aug 2019.
