Cancelling student visa to apply for tourist one starting on student visa expiry day

Hi all,

I am currently on a student-visa and I would like to be in Australia after it expires. The issue is: I will leave Australia to travel and booked a flight back arriving on the expiry day, so I could still get in Australia with my student visa. However, I would need a new visa for the following week (travel only as well).
I would like to know if I could get a tourist visa by cancelling my student visa once I finish my studies and leave Australia and apply for a tourist one starting on the expiry day of my previous student visa.

I know there's the Visitor visa possibility but that one has a fee, so I would like to know my chances with the option I described. Thanks!

To be granted a tourist visa you must satisfy the delegate (case officer) that you have a 'genuine intention' to reside temporarily in Australia.

Without knowing all the particulars of your case, it is not possible to form a considered opinion about your best strategy.

Yeah I just want to stay in Australia for one week more (travelling as a normal toursit, no work or study) than what my student visa allows. The issue with the tourist visa is that you must apply outside australia so I would have to cancel my student visa when I finish studies and am in another country so that I could apply. What I don't know is if I will be granted a tourist visa starting at least on the day that coincides with my expiry day of student visa (that even though would be cancelled, might cause a problem)

Here is the timeline: My student visa expires on the 9th of january 2019. I am departing Australia on the 23rd of December to travel outside Australia and have a flight to be back in Australia that arrives on the 9th of January. I need a visa for the week after, and I leave Australia pemanently on the 15th of January

Wouldn't it be easier to change your travel arrangements? It seems a lot of trouble to go through just to come back to Australia for a week.

You could also just return on the 10th on a tourist visa with the usual fine print of persuading the delegate you are a temporary visitor etc. etc.

Isn't the first Aussie Open match the 14/1 though? You gonna leave on 15/1?

No idea regarding chances - it would depend on your citizenship(s) and visa history I guess.
