Lodge 820 in Dec 2018 - student visa expired Mar 2019

Hi, I am planning to apply partner visa 820 by 1 Dec 2018, my current visa expired March 2019. I am leaving overseas for travel from 9 Dec 2018 to 4 Jan 2019.

I am not sure if I should lodge by Dec 2018 or Jan 2019?

The dillema:
I am travelling overseas to bring my partner to meet my parents, so its a big milestone for us. However, some immigration agents said that it is 'suspicious' to apply to close to my visa expiry date.

What do you guys think?

The best time to apply for a partner visa is when you are confident that you can meet the requirements and you have the evidence to support it. The expiry date of your visa is irrelevant. Just make sure that you do it well before your current visa expires, so you don’t run out of time. Also keep in mind that there are plans to introduce a seperate sponsorship process, which will make it difficult for onshore applicants if their temporary visa runs out before the sponsorship is approved. If you meet the requirements now, my advice would be to get on with it.

Will these changes impact those going from PMV 300 to the 820/801 also? Unsure if I need to apply to be a sponsor again within that application.
