Parent Visa Question

Hey guys,

My cousins and his family of 4 (wife + 2 kids) just got their PR early in January this year and i'm asking this on his behalf. He would like to bring his parents over to Australia so they can spend time with their grandchildren.

There's a 2 year residency requirement:
"You must be an Australian permanent resident and have lived in Australia for at least two years prior to your parents’ immigration, in order to be an eligible sponsor."

Does this 2 year requirement start on the day you were granted the PR or you just have to lived for 2 years in Australia at that point?

TIA!

Hey Aussiemoving

I think it will refer to actual time spent in Aus and not from when the PR was granted. I know when my family members applied for a PR extension/citizenship they were specifically interested in time in Aus and not the time that they had the visa for, so I'm pretty certain it will be the same case here.

Can I ask what visa your cousin is looking into to bring their parents over?

Thanks

The requirement is for the sponsors to be “ settled” in Australia.

I think they wanted to do the expensive one but were wondering on the 2year requirement. but over the weekend they mentioned they might try the new temporary visa (3 or 5 year for 5k/10k).

Not necessarily.

"Settled", in relation to an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen, means lawfully resident in Australia for a reasonable period.

Time spent on temporary visas before permanent residency was granted could be included.

If the sponsor has been lawfully resident in Australia for two years, (as at time of visa application,), this is generally considered to be a ‘reasonable period’.

There are all sort other ways to address the "settled" requirement and each case will be considered on an individual basis.
